It's For You

Porter: Mom, what's a telephone?

Me: What do you mean? (holds up phone)

Porter: Mooooooooom. That's an iPhone.

Me: (tries to explain the difference between a cell phone and a telephone)

Porter: Oooooohhh. It's one of those weird phones that's connected to the wall.

Me: Um, yes.

  1. Graham's cousin gave Ava this retro toy rotary phone, and it occurred to me that she will never instinctively know where the phrase "dial a number" came from. Maybe her generation will never even say that. I guess it was just hard to fathom even a few years ago that telephones were going to be a thing of the past. Weirdness.

  2. A long time ago, in my fourth grade classroom, I brought in a rotary phone for the kids to play with, and I had to teach the kids how to dial it. That surprised me then, so it's funny to hear Porter say that phones connected to the wall are weird. How much will change in the next 20 years?
